Strain Injury Variant Hit Point Rules
Normal damage is categorized as Strain. All Strain is recovered after a short rest.
Critical Hit damage, damage caused by failing a saving throw, and the hit that drops you below 0 HP, is categorized as Injury. Injury requires intervention, in the form of either magical or conventional healing, to recover.
I have written an extension for Fantasy Grounds that handles all of these rules, and have used it another campaign already. Don’t worry, it won’t slow anything down.
These rules reduce (but do not eliminate) the need for a dedicated healer in the party.
